Riley Blake Designs March 02 2015, 0 Comments
What a treat is it to be one of the stops on the Riley Blake Designs knit love blog tour! I was really excited that Julia asked Figgy's to join in the fun. Knits are and always will be my favorite type of fabric to use for clothing. Although they are my favorite I'm extremely picking about my knits. I will say that the quality of the RBD's knits are outstanding.I always wash and dry my fabrics first (shrinkage) and I was pleasantly surprise that I didn't loose 5" of my fabric like some knits I purchase. There was no fading and the weight is not too light but not heavy either. All wins in my book! I wish the knit was available when I was finishing my book because I could have used yards and yards of this gorgeous vibrant fabric. So now that the book is done (coming this July!!) I am able to start sewing again and hopefully push out some new patterns soon too! So for this post I used current patterns from the site. Portland weather is very sporadic so adding a touch of extra warmth for the rainy days is a great way to not feel weighed down but still warm.I created two adorable pieces for my niece Ofelia with a small twist to each. For the first garment we used the Seraphic Raglan Tee pattern and simply added a cowl neck instead of a band. There was no need to increase the size of the opening. Just measure the neck opening and cut a rectangle (with the stretch) the width of the opening and depending on your personal preference for how big the cowl is will determine the length. Example: 22" x 6" will give you a 3" fold. You simple sew the short raw edge together the fold the fabric in half lengthwise. Attach as you would a regular band.
Fabric: Hot Pink AztecThe next garment we used the Celestial Tee Pattern and added length to create an adorable tunic to pair with jeans or leggings and when it starts to warm up a bit the garment can be worn as a dress. We also added length to the sleeves and another cowl neck. The fabric was extremely easy to use and so so soft too! My niece is going to be so excited! I swear I don't think my sister has had to buy 1 outfit for her since birth!
Hemmed by hand with a whip stitch.Fabric: The Cottage Garden in GreyThank you Riley Blake for allowing me to play with your new line of yummy knits!!Have a fun time following the blog tour this month. I know I will!

How Pattern Parcel Works: Here at Perfect Pattern Parcel, we believe in supporting independent pattern designers. It’s our opinion that indie patterns are just, well, better than big box patterns, and we’re pretty sure our customers think so too. So, we allow customers to show their support in naming their own price for each Parcel. We also encourage customers to allocate part of their Parcel price to the charity Donorschoose.org in order to help classrooms in need. Pattern Parcel donates all profits after expenses from Parcel sales to the charity as well. Together we've raised over $11,000 for classrooms in need!

celestial maxi skirt November 15 2013, 0 Comments
supremely good, sublime
I'm in love with this skirt. I love the simplicity of the handkerchief hemline, the instructions for the french seams and the exposed elastic. This is the skirt mothers/fathers sewists dream of because it take 40 minutes to sew from cut to finish and the result is flawless and stylish. This skirt looks great paired with the Celestial Pullover or Pleated Tee and really hip with a layered look using the Seraphic Raglan and Celestial Pullover. Have fun playing with the hemline length to make a full, tee or knee length by just adducting the length on the pattern. On chilly winter days just add boots and Sunki leggins!
Fabric choices for the skirt vary from cotton lawn to jersey knit. Just make sure when you're shopping for the perfect fabric take the fabric off the bolt and check the drape. You want a fabric that will move with the person you're sewing for so nothing too stiff or heavy. I hope someone tries making the skirt in a lightweight small wale cord! Let me know if you do! Also, don't be afraid to try a 2-3" decorative elastic it can give the skirt a fun pop of color!
Happy Sewing - Shelly
SEW FAB e-PATTERN SALE STARTS TODAY! February 04 2013, 0 Comments
Hello Sewists!! Today is a great day for all us!
Today is the 1st day of the 1st ever Sew Fab e-Pattern Bundle Sale and giveaway, sponsored by The Southern Institute and Fat Quarter Shop!
Over the past eight weeks a lot of behind the scenes work has taken place to bring you this amazing bundle of ePatterns from several of the top pattern designers and bloggers in the sewing and blogging world. The result is a bundle of 18 PDF sewing patterns that you don't want to miss.
For one week only, ten pattern designers have come together to bring you 18 of their best PDF patterns, valued together at over $139.00, for the incredible price of $24.95! That's over 80% off of the combined retail value! Plus you can enter to win a dream of a giveaway valued at $390 from some really great shops!
For less than $25.00 you will have a library of resources that you can use over and over again. The designers that have joined this sale are experts in their craft. They have been sewing for a very long time and are well known in blogland and elsewhere. Each designer has contributed one or two of their favorite patterns to create a bundle that is sure to please! Whether you are sewing for your own family or making gifts for others, these are patterns that you will love to use.
If you've never sewn with a PDF pattern before, let me tell you how great it is! After downloading your pattern instructions and your pattern, you will print out the pattern itself, creating pattern tiles, if you will. Simply tape the tiles together to create the full pattern! At that point you can cut out the size that you need and pin the paper pattern directly to your fabric or you can trace the pattern size that you need onto sewing paper or tissue paper and cut it out, saving the paper pattern for later when you need to sew another size. Pdf patterns are so convenient because you can print them out as many times as you need!
Now let me tell you a little bit about the giveaway!
The Sew Fab Giveaway is amazing! One lucky winner will win a bunch of amazing prizes from Craftsy, Fat Quarter Shop, fabricworm, Jennifer's Jewels Custom Labels on Etsy, Green Bee Patterns, author Deborah Moebes, Mee a Bee, Gussy Sews, I'm Feeling Crafty, and Ball and Chain on Etsy.
